Something missing in his life

Gerard was sitting on a park bench in Central Memorial Park when I stopped to ask him if I could shoot his portrait. He was happy to oblige and just wanted to know why I wanted his photo. I explained that as a street photographer I always enjoyed talking to people and that I was documenting the stories of people I met on the streets. He went on to say that he’d rather not tell me his story as he didn’t think it was very interesting other than the fact he was trying to stop drinking every day. He’d been cutting down a lot lately but the Christmas period had taken a toll, and he’d had more than he should have. You could tell he’d already had a few today by the empty cans that sat in the plastic bag by his feet. It was clear that Gerard had something missing in his life but didn’t want to elaborate. I respected his privacy and didn’t push him any further and with that wished him a happy new year and hoped he would climb back on the wagon. He shook my hand and said he’d try……
